| I wished I looked more like this in 1979. |
Back in the late 1970s until about 1982, I LOVED Olivia Newton-John. I first discovered her as Sandra Dee in Grease. I swear, I thought Olivia was like this beautiful angel with a heavenly voice. I wished I looked like her. Skinny with lovely blonde hair. She was just so pretty.
Around that time, I was friends with an adorable tanned, blue-eyed, blonde-haired little girl from our neighborhood. Though she was two years younger than me, we would sometimes play together. Her parents spoiled her in a different way than mine did. I remember her room was so pink. We're talking floor to ceiling pretty shades of pink. In her room, we'd sink our toes into the soft mauve carpet of her fit-for-a-princess style bedroom and perform scenes and songs from the Grease. We'd play the album over and over and sing along to each song.
It's weird, but as young as I was, I remember feeling this odd sadness as we sang along, leaping on and off her bed pretending, play pillow fighting as if we were high schoolers in the slumber party scene. The neighborhood child looked much more like Sandy, Olivia Newton-John's character, than I ever did.
Back then, kids were different than they are today. In 1979, I don't remember us being as glam as today's kids. We weren't as hung up on growing up fast. Right? However, somehow I knew, deep down that I was more like a chubby, mousy brown haired younger version of Rizzo to this little girl's Sandy.
This blog was supposed to be about how I always thought the video for Olivia Newton-Johns' "Let's Get Physical" was super dirty. I was only like 10 when it aired and I thought it was just shockingly X-rated, filled with men in thongs. I just couldn't believe my eyes. Sorry, I got sidetracked and depressed the hell out of everyone comparing myself to Sandra Dee.
Thanks for listening.

And I wished I looked the way John Travolta looked in Grease too.
Rizzo was hot, so I wouldn't worry. ;)
LL How sweet are you? ;-)
Grease was my gateway ONJ. I loved it and I still do, however my obsession with Xanadu was legendary. It sparked my love of Greek Mythology and handkerchief hemmed skirts.
i had a thin, blonde best friend when i was a kid too. it set me up for a lifetime of feeling inadequate. some of us will always be rizzos, but i think i'm more than ok with that! <3
B23, very cool! I loved that song Xanadu :) Alicia, so true :)
I used to be in love with OLJ...I'm pretty sure that she was in to me, too.
Grease was my favorite thing ever as a kid. My imaginary friend was Sandy. No joke. I'm totally a Rizzo too and I'm ok with that. I agree that we didn't want to grow up as fast when we were kids. Well, maybe not. I always played office and bank. That's pretty grown up. Hahaha!

It sure was a much simpler and innocent world back then. It was for some anyway...
