The Great Space Coaster | Cool 1980s Kid's Show

Back in the early 1980s, we had awesome TV shows for kids featuring wacky looking singing and dancing puppets. If you think about it, I'm sure you can name a few. One show I really enjoyed was The Great Space Coaster.

This 30-minute show lasted for five seasons and starred characters such as Goriddle Gorilla and Edison the Elephant. And  of course, Who could forget Gary Gnu's "No gnus is good gnus show"?
To this day, 30 years later, I can still sing every word of the theme song... "It's The Great Space Coaster, Get on board.  On The Great Space Coaster, We'll explore. A comet ride of fantasy..."

RetroJunk.com describes The Great Space Coaster as, "A kid's fantasy/variety show about three friends who leave Earth each day in their 'Space Coaster'. Each episode featured several musical numbers (usually dealing with the various issues and problems kids face every day), plus news reports from Gary Gnu and book reviews from Speed Reader."

Relive the memories with The Great Space Coaster theme song!

My personal favorite, Gary Gnu!

  3. Well it was bound to happen. With as much as my sisters and brother assaulted me with everything from the 80's, you've finally come up with a show I don't know.

  5. Sweet! It's so hard for me to find other people who were Great Space Coaster fans. Whenever anyone talks about good news or bad news, I always say, "There's no gnus like good gnus," just to try and fete out the GSC fans. It never works.

  6. That show was sooooooo 70s! Even watching it as a kid in the 80s, it seemed a bit old school to me. I totally forgot about Goriddle Gorilla. You remember Gary Gnu who reads the gnews?

  10. Oh my gosh! 'And no gnus is good guns with Gary Gnu" I still find that slipping into my daily life speech. The funny thing is, most people have no idea to what I'm referring....LOLOLOL

  11. I loved nearly everything about this show, but Gary Gnu reading the Gnews was my favorite. The one part I always hated was when the Ringmaster would show up. He scared the crap out of me.

  12. My favorite part of this show was the pocket video player the one guy had that would play silly little animated films. Later found this animated series is called La Linea.

Just found out while watching the Being Elmo documentary that Kevin Clash was one of the creators of this program.

  14. I watched this awesomeness before I left the house to get the bus in first grade, I think it followed Scooby?? Eating cereal, getting ready, some meddling kids expose an old letch, and then the Great Space Coaster starts....good memories!
