Happy Mother's Day | My Mom, My BFF

Just a quick post to wish all of you moms out there a wonderful Mother's Day. This year I opted to stick around New Jersey, thinking we'd do dinner with my mother-in-law. She always tells us not to worry about her and to go off and do whatever we need to do. Afraid she was just saying that, we were slightly conflicted on how to plan. She's taking care of her elderly, sick uncle today and told us she'll take a rain check on dinner. This means we aren't doing anything today. We're simply making Sunday dinner for ourselves as if it were any other Sunday. It feels weird.

Hubs and I went to breakfast at our local coffee shop this morning where I was wished a Happy Mother's Day. The other day at the nail salon, I was given a gift bag with floral flip-flops and wished a Happy Mother's Day weekend. Why is it that just because I'm a woman old enough to have a teenager, everyone assumes I'm a mother? I never think to wish every man I see a happy Father's Day... Does this happen to guys everywhere too?

Since I can't be with my mother today, I'm posting two of my favorite photos. I'm sure there are many more, but these two came to mind first...

One photo is of me at age 7. I was tried and cranky and Mom was fixing my hair for my aunt's wedding. The other is of us getting ready for my own wedding on 11.8.08.

I am very lucky to have a mother who is accepting, loving, open-minded and understanding. I hope she knows how much I love her.

Weekend Retro Rewind | Van Halen Hot For Teacher

"Sit Down, Waldo!" was one of my favorite catch phrases of 1984. Why? Because of this hot, steamy MTV video for Van Halen's Hot For Teacher. Now, truth be told, I'm far from a fan of this type of music today. I've never been into rocker bands or hair bands.  I always thought those bands were like, "for boys."

However, when you're 11 and don't have any hip older brothers or sisters guiding your musical taste, you're screwed.  This is why I tried to rescue my brother's bad taste by forcing The Smiths and Depeche Mode on him at an early age. Didn't work. He preferred Pantera, Metallica and Samhaim to my dark, depressing ballads from the UK.

As you know, I attended Catholic school between grades 3-8. I must confess, this video was shocking. It truly was. The level of filth, I'm serious. I loved the song, but there was something that made me feel nervous while watching this video. I would turn my head around like Linda Blair in The Exorcist to make sure my parents weren't around every time it aired. In my mind, it was a straight-up porno on regular TV.

We didn't have the Playboy Channel, but to a Catholic school kid in 1984, this was just as dirty. Even now, watching it as an adult, I am ashamed of myself for liking this song in 6th grade. Maybe that's why I was making out with Eddie in the church balcony a year later.

Cool Trivia Bits About The Video:

1. The voice of Waldo is actually that of the late SNL comedian Phil Hartman.
2. David Lee Roth directed the "Hot For Teacher" video.
3. Eddie Van Halen's solo was ranked by Guitar World as #46 of all-time.
4. Fans sometimes think the line "I don't feel tardy" is "I don't feel dirty" but it is indeed "tardy."
5. There is some crazy confusion as to which hot chick played the hot teacher. Some say it's Lillian Muller, while others say it's Wayne Gretzky's wife, Janet Jones. I bet our favorite dirty boy blogger, Copyboy, would know. Ha ha!

Johnson's No More Tangles

Remembering Johnson's No More Tangles for Removing Knots from Kids' Hair

The other day Samantha at Apple Juice and Milk talked about the long, crazy knotted hair she had as a little girl. It was a true chore for her mom to comb, so she chopped it into a short, boyish style cut.

Her post reminded me ... I too had long hair up until about fourth grade. Which is perfect, as you know I'm all about being the perpetual Fourth Grade Nothing ... It was in fourth grade that I began making more and more of my own choices. My mom loved my hair long and I didn't. My hair has never been longer than shoulder length since grade four. Not even for my wedding.

The reason I'm telling you about my once long mane, is to remind you about an awesome product. You see, my mom was a smart, savvy consumer. Why? She used Johnson's No More Tangles. This magical hair conditioning potion, whipped up by Johnson's biochemists, saved me from years of tears. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you Johnson's. I'd also love to give the scientist behind the first kids conditioning hair spray a shout out, but sadly I was unable to locate any history on this product.

With conditioner being a staple in every family's home today, I was slightly surprised that No More Tangles is still popular today. In fact, Johnson's has an entire line of "untangling" hair products for children. If you're a Mommy Blogger, you probably know that already.
