| "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" was my summer of '83 song! |
It's weird, when I think back to the summer of 1983, I think of Bonnie Tyler singing, "Turnaround bright eyes, Every now and then I fall apart" and "Once upon a time I was falling in love/But now I'm only falling apart/There's nothing I can do/A total eclipse of the heart" ... I remember it like it was yesterday. The emotional lyrics that meant nothing to a ten-year-old that summer. Didn't matter that I had no idea what Bonnie was talking about! I'd belt out the words along to the song every time I heard it blasting off my tiny radio poolside.
Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" was released on March 5, 1983, yet it was my summer song. I never really get that. I mean why would that song still be so popular like four months later that one would remember it in the summer. A year later I was loving Bonnie Tyler's "Holding out for a Hero" on the Footloose soundtrack. I adored loving Kevin Bacon -- at that time he was my hero as Ren. At 11, I wanted nothing more than to dance my butt off to the Footloose soundtrack. Footloose was my movie in 1984. Seriously and I don't care about remakes, you know about me from my Karate Kid complaints.
I was not that crazy about Bonnie Tyler back in the day, but now I have come around to really enjoy her 80s hits.

ReplyDeleteOH MY GOD! I love Bonnie Tyler! I first heard Total Eclipse of the Heart in 1996, when some techno club singer Nikki French did a remix. Then I heard the REAL version and was blown AWAY!
ReplyDeleteFYI: Jim Steinman, who is responsible for pretty much any song Meatloaf ever made, and that Celine Dione song It's All Coming Back to Me Now, wrote this song....yup.
He, besides Bernie Taupin who is Elton John's on again off again composer, is my song writin hero!
Bah, can't say I have much fondness for this song, for some reason, but for a decade I worked out in very remote parts of the CA desert.
ReplyDeleteOne summer, out in the middle of nowhere, the song "You Gotta Be" by Des'ree played over and over and over on the only radio station we could tune in.
I hated it at the time (because they played it every two hours), but that song has come to represent the summer I worked in that field location, out in that part of the CA boonies lol... =)

Yep. I remember hearing this song and being overwhelmed by the emotion in her voice. To tell you the truth, sort of shied away from it since she seemed to be pretty wrapped up in it. It seemed like a private moment in the life of the insane.

I loved both of those songs and Footloose, as well. Still a fan of Kevin Bacon. Loved "Taking Chance".

ReplyDeleteOk you hate remakes of movies, but what about remakes of songs? I actually don't mind the club version of Bonnie Tyler's classic.
ReplyDeleteI think of the summer time when I hear that song too. I didn't realize how old that song is though. I was born in 1982 and that song has always been on my playlists and almost every mix tape/cd I have ever made.

ReplyDeleteWe have never had great radio statoins here. They tend to play the same 8 songs over & over, and about 4 months later than everywhere else. This was one song that made the rotation. So I know it by heart.

ReplyDeleteIts so funny when I see covers of 80s songs and 90s songs and I'm like damn. I know about the originals but Im not old enough to really have experienced them in their heyday. My parents who were teens in the 80s put me in my place quite often when I think theres an original song thats really a cover. :-/
